Our History
In 2011, friends and families in the Tabuariki neighbourhood just outside the capital of Honiara underwent a process of transformation.
Initiated by a local couple from Malaita with their 3 children, Brilliant Star developed when meaningful conversations about community building were carried out in the community. Inspired by their involvement in the Ruhi Institute process which aimed at building capacity, the community initiated a number of small children’s classes in the Alligator Creek neighbourhood.
As a result, institute participants became active agents of spiritual and social change in the community, reaching out to the neighbourhood and having meaningful conversations about the importance of the spiritual education of children. After a drastic growth of children’s classes in the community over a short span of time, teams of children’s classes were established in 7 different locations.
As the initiative grew more interest, these small children’s classes aimed at developing the spiritual capacity of young children, transformed into what we know now as Brilliant Star School.
Responding to the needs of the community, Brilliant Star School has been providing formal mainstream education for students in the area for 9 years. As many families in the area experience financial hardship and live far from the nearest schools, Brilliant Stars has become a source of hope for the community. In 2011, Brilliant Star School opened in a small settlement in Alligator Creek just outside of the capital of Honiara.
Physical developments
In the beginning, classes were run under the trees or homes in the community using materials from Book 3 of the Ruhi institute. Over the years, with support from the community, a small early childhood classroom was built using basic bush materials to cater to the growing number of children wanting to attend.
Following conversations with the parents, other classrooms were built using local materials with assistance of the pioneers.
Fifteen children were enrolled in 2012.
That number grew to sixty the following year.
In 2015, 145 children were enrolled with 5 teachers now teaching at the school. As the needs arise, more local buildings were constructed.
